Heightened Vigilance in Northern Coahuila following Severe Weather in Texas
Communities in northern Coahuila, Mexico, are on high alert as an inevitable result of intense rainfall, hailstorms, and rising river levels stemming from severe weather that began impacting southern Texas late Thursday. Civil Protection units are closely monitoring the situation in Piedras Negras, Nava, Zaragoza, and the surrounding “Five Springs” region, prioritizing citizen safety.
Francisco Contreras Obregón, Civil Protection coordinator for northern Coahuila, emphasized the particular focus on the River Hidden as it passes thru Zaragoza. Recent rainfall in the Serranía del Burro, the river’s source, exceeded 2.5 inches (6.35 centimeters), prompting concerns about potential flooding. Authorities are meticulously tracking the river’s course to mitigate risks for both Zaragoza and Piedras Negras.
“We are vigilantes of the flow of the river hidden in the populated area… they follow the water channels to discard Risks also for pn.”

Adding to the weather woes, Nava and Allende experienced significant hailstorms yesterday afternoon. Reports from residents, widely shared on social media, indicated hailstones ranging from 4 to 5 centimeters in diameter. Such hailstorms can cause considerable damage to property, agriculture, and infrastructure. according to the National Weather Service, hailstorms of this magnitude are becoming increasingly frequent due to changing climate patterns.
Preparing for the Worst: Civil Protection Measures
Civil Protection agencies are urging residents in the affected areas to take necessary precautions. These include:
- Staying informed about weather updates and advisories.
- Avoiding unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain or hail.
- Securing loose objects that could be damaged or become projectiles in strong winds.
- Having an emergency kit prepared with essential supplies.
The coordinated response highlights the importance of cross-border collaboration in managing the impacts of severe weather events. As climate change continues to exacerbate extreme weather patterns, such preparedness and cooperation will become even more critical.
