Pit lane Controversy: Marquez Brothers in Hot Water

The Spanish MotoGP qualifying session witnessed a contentious moment involving siblings Marc and Alex Marquez. Both riders incurred fines following a pit lane incident during Q2, though they managed to avoid grid penalties.

The Incident: Red Light Violation

During the Q2 session on saturday, April 26th, both Marc and Alex Marquez were observed exiting the pit lane despite the red light still being illuminated. This violation, initially flagged by fellow competitor francesco Bagnaia, raised concerns about potential penalties.

Let’s see if something will change because Alex and Marc start with a red light still light at the pit exit.

Francesco Bagnaia

Bagnaia implied that a penalty was warranted given the clear violation of pit lane regulations.

Marquez’s defense and FIM’s Decision

Marc Marquez defended his actions, stating that he realized the red light and braked promptly, believing he hadn’t broken any rules. He argued that a penalty would be excessive, given his prompt reaction.

If I get a penalty for that, there’s no need to have a championship.I immediately stopped the motorbike and thought the lights were green. I braked hard and stopped.

Though, the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) resolute that both riders were indeed in violation. Marc and Alex were each fined €2,000 (approximately Rp 38.3 million). The FIM acknowledged Marc’s attempt to stop, but noted Alex continued past the red light.

Additional Penalty for Alex Marquez

In addition to the fine, Alex Marquez faced a further penalty: the cancellation of his fastest lap from the first lap. Fortunately for Alex, his best time was recorded on his sixth lap, mitigating the impact of the penalty.

Starting Grid Positions Unaffected

Despite the fines and lap cancellation, both Marquez brothers retained their qualifying positions.Marc secured second place on the starting grid, while Alex will start from fourth. This outcome allows them to compete for a podium finish without further hindrance.

Safety in the Pit Lane: A Constant Concern

Pit lane safety remains a paramount concern in MotoGP. Incidents like this highlight the importance of strict adherence to regulations. In 2024, there were 15 pit lane speeding penalties issued across all motogp classes, underscoring the frequency of these violations and the need for continued vigilance.
