Streamlining Government Spending: A New Era of Fiscal Duty?
President prabowo Subianto is prioritizing budget efficiency as a cornerstone of his administration. In a recent discussion at his residence in Hambalang, West Java, he outlined plans to cut wasteful spending and redirect funds towards critical sectors like education. This initiative aims to combat corruption and eliminate unnecessary expenditures, perhaps saving trillions of Rupiah.
Combating Corruption and Eliminating wasteful Spending
President Subianto emphasized that the savings generated from eliminating corruption, both large and small, will be reinvested into priority areas. He specifically targeted activities like comparative studies,
which he believes offer minimal value and can be eliminated to free up significant resources.
What we save is the things that we are sure of corruption, small, medium and large corruption.
Education Sector to Benefit from Efficiency Drive
The education sector stands to gain significantly from these budgetary reforms. President Subianto highlighted the potential to reallocate funds from superfluous activities to improve school infrastructure. He cited an example where Rp 22 trillion, previously allocated to what he deemed unnecessary spending, could instead be used to renovate approximately 19,000 schools.
This focus on education aligns with current statistics highlighting the need for infrastructure improvements in Indonesian schools. According to a 2024 report by the Ministry of Education and Culture, a significant percentage of schools require urgent repairs to provide a safe and conducive learning environment.
Rethinking Official Travel and Ceremonial Events
President Subianto acknowledged the necessity of certain official trips, citing examples such as the Coordinating Minister for the Economy’s visit to Washington D.C. and the Minister of Finance’s portrayal at the G20 summit. However, he drew a distinction between essential travel and what he considers less productive comparative studies,
suggesting substantial savings could be achieved by curtailing the latter.
furthermore, the President addressed the issue of ceremonial events within ministries and institutions. He expressed satisfaction with initial reports indicating a shift away from lavish displays towards more practical and cost-effective approaches. As an example, he mentioned the upcoming Kopassus anniversary celebration, which will prioritize online engagement and direct assistance to soldiers over traditional ceremonial fanfare.
this mindset which changes, which must change a little. But I’m glad I have heard many events saved.
The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities
While President Subianto’s commitment to fiscal responsibility is a welcome development, the implementation of these reforms will likely face challenges. Overcoming bureaucratic inertia and resistance to change will be crucial to achieving the desired outcomes. However, the potential benefits – a more efficient government, reduced corruption, and improved public services – are significant and warrant a concerted effort.
