On Tuesday, a powerful avalanche swept through the Pollfjellt tunnel area in Lyngen, trapping three Slovenian tourists. While one man was quickly rescued after being swept into the sea, the situation for the othre two was dire. tragically, after an extensive search, authorities have suspended efforts to find the remaining woman, presuming her death. Avalanche fatalities are a grim reality in mountainous regions, with an average of 27 deaths per year in Europe, according to the european Avalanche warning Services.

Whiskey’s Heroic Discovery

Amidst the chaos, hope emerged in the form of Whiskey, a highly trained rescue dog. While other rescuers focused on a different area, Whiskey picked up Jagunić’s scent, leading him 70 meters uphill. His steadfast digging alerted the team to Jagunić’s location,buried one and a half meters beneath the snow.

Jagunić’s survival was nothing short of miraculous. Trapped for over seven hours, he remained conscious in a small air pocket. After five hours, he managed to create enough space to reach his cell phone and call for help. However,the rescue was far from over. The risk of further avalanches forced rescuers to meticulously plan their approach, adding another two hours to Jagunić’s ordeal.

The reunion between Jagunić and Whiskey, along with some of the rescue team, was deeply emotional. Fredrik Munkvold Hammer, avalanche leader in Norwegian People’s Aid Tromsø, expressed how rare and special it was to rescue someone alive after so many years of participating in rescue operations.

In a heartwarming display of gratitude, Patrik Jagunić, the avalanche survivor, recently had an emotional meeting with the team who saved his life, including the remarkable rescue dog, Whiskey. Bård Rannestad, section chief for UNN’s air ambulances, facilitated the meeting, fulfilling a promise he made to Jagunić.

Rannestad described the encounter as a pretty strong and private session. He also noted the apparent connection between Jagunić and Whiskey, suggesting a mutual recognition of the life-saving bond they shared. There was good contact between the saved and the rescue dog. It was almost a form of recognition there, Rannestad stated, adding, And I just have to say, it was a very strong moment to take part in.

Against the Odds: A Miraculous Survival

jagunić’s survival is considered exceptionally rare. He sustained only minor injuries – a few scrapes and some bruised ribs – and was even able to walk to the ambulance after being pulled from the snow. According to Rannestad, survival times in avalanches are typically very short.

Most people die in 20-30 minutes. It is indeed also, unfortunately our experience here at UNN, after participating in many actions.

Rannestad emphasized the extraordinary nature of Jagunić’s case. Then there are some exceptions, and this is probably the most extreme exception we have experienced in our region. He noted that while a few individuals in the Alps have survived similar or slightly longer periods, Jagunić’s experience remains a remarkable outlier.

Following his release from the hospital, Jagunić has returned home to Slovenia. Rannestad believes the meeting with his rescuers provided closure and allowed him to express his profound gratitude for being alive.
