Home Telecom and Berkeley County School District Partner to Bridge the Digital Divide in Cross Community
In a significant step to ensure equitable access to technology, Home Telecom has renewed its partnership with the Berkeley County School District (BCSD) to provide free or discounted high-speed internet to students in the Cross community. This initiative aims to address the critical issue of the digital divide in this rural area.
Supporting Student Success
BCSD Superintendent Dr. Anthony Dixon expressed excitement about this partnership: “We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Home Telecom, a key supporter of our students’ educational advancement.” This ongoing partnership plays a crucial role in bridging the digital divide, ensuring that all students in the Cross Community have the necessary tools to excel academically both in and out of the classroom.
Google Grant and Data Support
A grant from Google, coupled with data from BCSD, will enable Home Telecom to offer affordable high-speed internet and in-home Wi-Fi to qualifying families. The program is available to households with students attending Cross Elementary or Cross High School, covering grades 1 through 12 for the remainder of the school year and beyond.
Prior Initiatives and Ongoing Upgrades
Over the past six years, BCSD has implemented initiatives like OneBerkeley Connects, providing students with Chromebooks for both school and home use. However, the availability of reliable broadband internet remains essential for students in rural areas.
Home Telecom’s Commitment to Cross Community
Home Telecom President and CEO William S. Helmly expressed pride in renewing their partnership with BCSD: “We are honored to work with the Berkeley County School District to launch this impactful program in the Cross community.”
In addition to this initiative, Home Telecom has been upgrading broadband technology in Cross. In 2024, the company installed over 600 miles of fiber optic cable, bringing high-speed internet to many locations. By spring 2025, all households in the project area will have access to advanced fiber technology.
Ensuring Connectivity for Students
The process of contacting eligible households and setting up the service has already commenced. This proactive approach ensures that students remain connected and continue to succeed academically.
