Pregnancy rewires the brain

A second pregnancy changes the brain again and uniquely. This is shown by a study by the Amsterdam University Medical Center Nature Communications was published. Researchers led by Elseline Hoekzema scanned the brains of 110 women.

During the first pregnancy, the DMN, which is responsible for self-reflection and social thinking, primarily changes. During the second pregnancy, this network fine-tunes itself further. At the same time, the brain now adapts more strongly in areas that control attention and sensory processing. The study of 627 young adults shows that mental wandering in ADHD is often an unregulated activation of the DMN. This network comes to the fore even when concentrated work is actually required. Particularly hyperactive people even consciously activate their DMN – for internal stimulation. ADHD does not appear to be a pure lack of attention, but rather as a constant competition between inner thoughts and external tasks.

The clinical significance of the DMN extends to pain research. The Penn State College of Medicine is now using NIH funding to study how the network behaves in chronic pain. The goal is a reliable biomarker that indicates the transition from acute to chronic pain early. Such markers could enable preventative therapies and help in the fight against the opioid crisis.
