Bolivia & Morocco: SADR Recognition Reversed – Latest News

by drbyos

Bolivia announced the suspension of its recognition of the entity called the “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” (SADR), marking a notable turning point in its foreign policy. This position was made public following a telephone conversation between the head of Moroccan diplomacy, Nasser Bourita, and his Bolivian counterpart, Fernando Aramayo.

According to the joint statement, the Plurinational State of Bolivia has carried out a “sovereign review” of its foreign policy, in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolution 2797 (2025) and reaffirming its support for the political process carried out under the auspices of the United Nations.

A suspension of relations with the SADR

Following this reassessment, La Paz decided to suspend diplomatic relations with the SADR and to end all official contact with this entity. The press release emphasizes in particular that it “is not recognized as a member state of the United Nations”.
The Bolivian authorities explain that this decision aims to contribute “constructively” to international efforts to achieve a “realistic, pragmatic and lasting” political solution, based on compromise and consistent with UN parameters.

A new chapter with Morocco

This diplomatic development opens a new phase in relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and Bolivia. The two countries have in fact agreed to reestablish their diplomatic relations, which had been broken for several years.
In this dynamic of rapprochement, Rabat and La Paz have also decided to initiate the necessary procedures for the establishment of resident diplomatic missions in their respective capitals, namely La Paz and Rabat.

A diplomatic signal

This decision is part of an international context where several countries have revised their position on the Sahara issue. For Rabat, this is additional diplomatic support for the UN approach to resolving the dispute.
On the Bolivian side, the authorities highlight a desire for consistency with the United Nations political process and to contribute to a negotiated solution.
The warming of relations between the two countries could now result in a strengthening of bilateral cooperation, both politically and economically, in the months to come.
