Maggie Betts to Direct Netflix’s ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’
Filmmaker Maggie Betts has been tapped to direct the adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s best-selling novel “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” for Netflix.
Betts, known for her work on Amazon MGM’s legal drama “The Burial” and Sony Pictures Classic’s “Novitiate,” will also co-write the screenplay with Liz Tigelaar. Tigelaar is recognized for her work on “Tiny Beautiful Things” and “Little Fires Everywhere.”
Plot Summary
Set in the glamorous world of Old Hollywood, “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” revolves around a reclusive celebrity actress who gives her final interview to an aspiring journalist. During the interview, Evelyn pulls back the curtain on her seven marriages, revealing the secrets and scandals that shaped her life.
Netflix’s Choice
Netflix acquired the rights to Reid’s novel in 2022. Despite popular fan demands for Jessica Chastain to portray Evelyn Hugo, Chastain has ruled out the possibility. The casting of the lead role remains undisclosed.

Taylor Jenkins Reid will executive produce along with Margaret Chernin. Additionally, 3Dot Productions will be involved with Liza Chasin as a producer. Brad Mendelsohn of Circle Management + Productions, known for bringing “Daisy Jones & The Six” to life, will also contribute as a producer.

In January, Leslye Headland, initially attached as the director, and co-creator of “Russian Doll” and director of “The Acolyte” in the Star Wars series, announced her departure from the project. Headland expressed her support for the film, believing it will be a huge success.
