Armed men broke in after the game and shot at the attendees who were in a neighborhood soccer field, in the city of Salamanca, with 160,000 inhabitants, reported Mayor César Prieto.
The official called on Claudia Sheinbaum‘s government to help him “recover peace” in his town. “The death of 11 people was confirmed, of which 10 lost their lives at the scene and one more while receiving medical attention at a hospital,” the municipality said in a statement.
“Likewise, 12 people were injured by gunshot wounds and are receiving medical attention,” he added. Prieto specified that among the injured there is a woman and a minor. Municipal authorities indicated that security forces launched an operation to find those responsible.
This city, where an important refinery of the state-owned Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) operates, experienced a turbulent weekend with the discovery on Saturday night of four bags with human remains.
A request for help from the government for security
The mayor of Salamanca attributed this violent wave to the presence of various organized crime groups. The Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), one of the most powerful in Mexico, operate mainly in Guanajuato.
“Yesterday we had five people murdered in the community of Cuatro de Altamira, one more in San Vicente de Flores,” the official said in a video posted on his social networks.
The mayor maintained that last week there was “a threat of an explosive device” at a door of the Pemex refinery. Prieto called on Sheinbaum and the state governor, Libia Denisse García, to help “recover peace, tranquility and security.”
“We are going through a serious moment, a serious social decomposition. There are criminal groups trying to subdue the authority, which they are not going to achieve,” he added.
Guanajuato, an important industrial enclave with international automotive assembly plants and numerous tourist attractions, is one of the most violent states in Mexico due to the presence of organized crime groups, which dispute the distribution of retail drugs and theft of fuel pipelines, according to analysts.
At the beginning of the year, the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum boasted that the homicide rate in Mexico fell in 2025 to its lowest level in a decade, as a result of its security strategy.
