WASHINGTON – The United States (US) kept secret documents about its contacts with the government of then Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, ahead of the invasion of that country. This news was revealed by Andrei Artizov, head of the Russian Federal Archives Agency, to Sputnik.

“At one time, the Americans declassified documents about their contacts with Saddam Hussein’s regime, including through military channels. And then, when the need arose to enter Iraq, they reclassified them,” Artizov said.

He added, “No one is formal when it comes to defending national interests.”

In March 2003, the US and its allies invaded Iraq, claiming the country possessed weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

They captured Baghdad and overthrew Saddam Hussein, who was executed in 2006 on charges of committing various crimes based on political, ethnic and religious reasons.

International inspectors never found evidence of WMD.
