One capsule for the skin, two for the hair. The pill box has long since found a place in the bathroom cupboard between jars and tubes. But it’s not just beauty products that are trendy, but also nutritional supplements. Most popular: vitamin C and magnesium. They promise health – or are at least associated with it. It’s all nonsense, say many official bodies.
Consumer advice centers never tire of pointing out that dietary supplements are considered food. This means: Unlike medicines, they do not go through an approval process. The manufacturers themselves are responsible for quality, effectiveness and safety. There are repeated warnings about overdoses and interactions. After all, there are currently no legally set maximum amounts for vitamins and minerals in dietary supplements in Germany, only recommendations.
