It was a manageable first half in the An der Alten Försterei stadium, in which the hosts had the first good opportunity through Woo-Yeong Jeong. But the 26-year-old South Korean was too hasty in his attempt to finish after winning the ball and put it well over the top.
On the other side, Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow reacted outstandingly twice – first against Yan Diomande from play (17th), then against a header from Christoph Baumgartner (18th) after a corner. Then little happened before Jannik Haberer caught a cross from the left side with his knee in the first minute of injury time and put it just wide of the post.
The second half also got off to a manageable start before Oliver Burke asked his opponent to dance in the 57th minute and then flicked the ball into the corner from the edge of the penalty area. The joy of the dream goal was short-lived, however, as Tidiam Gomis, who had just been substituted, scored with a powerful shot from twelve meters to make it 1-1.
Union seemed to be counted out and yet struck again. After fantastic preparatory work on the right side and Christopher Trimmel, it was Ilyas Ansah who headed in to make it 2-1 (63′). Anyone who expected a Leipzig storm would be disappointed. The Saxons had little idea, while Union closed the spaces well and even scored in the third minute of injury time after a counterattack and through Tim Skarke to make the final score 3-1.
