Technique: Also known as CAT, this position was designed to help opposite-sex couples close the orgasm gap, but two partners with vulvas can do this as well with a strap-on. From missionary, the giving partner moves up and down vertically, rocking and grinding to stimulate the receiving partner’s clitoris, rather than just thrusting in and out.
Benefits: Due to the distance between the clitoral glans and the vaginal entrance, many intercourse positions, including missionary, do not provide enough clitoral stimulation to lead to orgasm, Ian Kerner, PhD, LMFT, a certified couples and sex therapist and author of She Comes First, previously told Women’s Health. But grinding the base of the penis or pelvis against the clitoris creates pressure and friction, increasing pleasure.
Make it hotter: “Many people like to squeeze their legs together during the CAT to increase pressure and intensity,” Jess O’Reilly, PhD, a sexologist and host of the Sex With Dr. Jess podcast previously told WH.
Pro tip: Play around with different depths and angles to figure out what feels best for both partners. “Sometimes, the person with the penis or strap-on will insert just the tip and ride high enough to create a close-to 90-degree angle of shaft to clitoris,” Kerner says, “or the position can also be achieved with deeper penetration.”
