Jeonbuk Jeonju City Council member Ohn Hye-jeong (Wua 1 and 2-dong, Hoseong-dong) called for the establishment of a dental treatment support system for seniors with dementia on the 17th.

Representative On Hye-jeong said in a 5-minute free speech at the 425th regular meeting that day, “The number of dementia patients in Jeonju has recently reached about 12,000,” and “A number of medical studies have revealed a close relationship between the number of teeth and the incidence of dementia, but the importance of oral health in dementia management is not receiving attention.”

Rep. Ohn pointed out, “Some local governments, such as Seoul and Busan, have designated dental care institutions specializing in dementia patients and are improving the treatment environment and piloting a mobile treatment system,” adding, “There is not a single dementia-safe dental clinic in Jeonbuk.”

He continued, “We will need to designate a dementia-safe dental clinic centered on dentists skilled in treating dementia patients and operate a mobile dental care vehicle if necessary.”

Rep. On said, “Oral health is brain health and the first step in preventing dementia. We must quickly establish a foundation for oral health support that can provide peace of mind to dementia patients and their families by linking the Jeonju City Dementia Relief Center and the dental medical system.”
