OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.1, the improved version. The update includes two new variants – Instant and Thinking – designed to offer users a smarter, more natural and flexible experience. According to OpenAI, GPT-5.1 Instant is “warmer,” smarter, and can follow instructions more precisely, while GPT-5.1 Thinking communicates more clearly, completes simple tasks faster, and performs more robustly on complex tasks. The company emphasizes that users now have more control over the tone of the conversation.
ChatGPT is easier to customize with new sound presets including Professional, Candid and Quirky, which join the existing Default, Nerdy, Cynical, Friendly and Efficient options.
Requests will be automatically routed to the most appropriate version via GPT-5.1 Auto as the update is rolled out gradually starting today.
Users of the Pro, Plus, Go and Business plans initially receive early access, while users of the free version can access it later. Enterprise and Edu customers can pre-activate GPT-5.1 for seven days; the new model then becomes the official default model of ChatGPT. OpenAI notes that the rollout will be gradual to ensure stability. GPT-5 will remain available to paid subscribers in the Older Models menu for the next three months.
