Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Mozart in front of Miloš Forman‘s camera for a must-see cinema.
In the 18th century, in Vienna, Antonio Salieri, the official composer of the music-loving emperor Joseph II, tried to acquire eternal glory. To do this, he must oust Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, his rival whose profound genius he admires.
This pitch is that of Amadeus, a true classic of the seventh art broadcast this Friday evening on France 5. A must-see biopic which allowed Czech filmmaker Miloš Forman to triumph once again at the Oscars nine years after One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. In total, Amadeus won a whopping eight statuettes, including the major ones for Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor for Tom Hulce.
Praised by AlloCiné spectators with an excellent average rating of 4.3 out of 5, Amadeus is adapted from the play of the same name by the British Peter Shaffer (who wrote the screenplay for the film), itself freely inspired by a short play by Pushkin called Mozart and Salieri. The result? A pure marvel.
Far from being a classic biopic, Amadeus, which takes quite a few liberties with reality, is a fictionalized and transgressive biography of Mozart focusing as much on the genius of the composer as on his madness and his mischievousness (you will not forget his laugh!). Sublime sets and costumes, quality of the historical reconstruction… Amadeus is an essential work whose strong point is undoubtedly the opposition between the musician and his rival Antonio Salieri (whose point of view the story adopts), played brilliantly by F. Murray Abraham.
Alexandre Astier big fan of “Amadeus”
Recently asked about the films that had a profound impact on him, Alexandre Astier cited the fascinating Amadeus. “For me, it’s the perfect biopic”he declared in the show En aparté on Canal+. “The biopic is an extremely complicated exercise, because we are fooled by the facts. But in fact, we write fairy tales, we are not here to write facts. Facts are never enough. Amadeus is the proof. We take facts, yes, but there is a play at the basis of all that. There is something thematic about talent, about the injustice of the Gift of God.”
Amadeus, a big success in French theaters with more than 4.5 million spectators, is coming to your living room this evening. Don’t miss the opportunity to thrill to this must-have of the seventh art!
