Santo Domingo Este.– The Metropolitan Area won the V Women’s Sports Games 2026which were closed by the Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruzin a solemn ceremony held at the Ciudad Juan Bosch sports center, in this municipality.
The metropolitan representation, made up of the National District and the province of Santo Domingoreached 52 medalsdistributed in 22 gold, 14 silver and 16 bronze.
The metropolitan athletes occupied the first place in seven sports disciplines: basketball (5×5), indoor volleyball, softball, basketball (3×3), duathlon, karate and Olympic wrestling.
The second position of the Women’s Sports Games corresponded to the Eastern regionwhich added 54 medalsdivided into 14 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze, by dominating in the sports of skating and weightlifting (weights).
He Third place went to the North regionwith 26 medals (13 gold, six silver and seven bronze), after winning in beach volleyball, taekwondo and athletics. The fourth position he got it Southern region, with 55 metalsthe largest amount in total.
The 2026 Women’s Sports Games were dedicated to Mrs. Melba Segura de Grullón and they celebrated from Thursday, March 19 to Sunday, March 22with powers in 13 sports: basketball (5×5 and 3×3), volleyball (indoor and beach), karate, judo, weightlifting (weights), duathlon, athletics, skating, softball, Olympic wrestling and taekwondo.
In addition, the event included the participation of 680 athletes and four invited countries: Saint Martin, Costa Rica, Cuba and Puerto Rico.
The Cubans were left in first place in judowhile the Costa Ricans and the representatives of Saint Martin They took second place in 5×5 and 3×3 basketball, respectively.
Closing ceremony
The formal closing ceremony of the V Women’s Sports Games was held at the Juan Bosch City sports center, in the Santo Domingo Este municipality, Santo Domingo province.
It was headed by the Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz; the senator Maria Mercedes Ortizfrom the Hermanas Mirabal province, who chaired the Organizing Committee of the Women’s Games; the mayor Dio Astaciofrom the Santo Domingo Este municipality, and the councilor Felito Rodríguez.
Minister Kelvin Cruz, in his speech, exclaimed: “Mission accomplished! A dream come true with the celebration and closing of these 2026 Women’s Sports Games, which had not been held for 10 years and we have rescued them with the support of the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, who attended the opening day with the honoree, Mrs. Melba Segura de Grullón.”
He also stated that “The expectations created materialized and we are committed to celebrating the Women’s Games every year, because our athletes are the cornerstone of this management that I lead in the Ministry of Sports.”
Senator Ortiz also spoke, who highlighted the support of President Abinader and Minister Cruzwhile stating that “When there is a will, everything is possible by the will of God.”
Furthermore, they were present Garibaldi Bautistapresident of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD); the vice minister of Women, Juana Josérepresenting the owner Gloria Reyes; and the vice ministers of Sports Kennedy Vargas, Samuel Hernández, Franklin de la Mota and the immortal of sport Fernando Teruel.
Likewise, former athletes and immortals attended Milagros Cabral (volleyball); Félix Díaz and Luisito Pie (taekwondo) and Maria Dimitrova (karate, in the specialty of kata). The presidents of sports federations also participated Jose Luis Ramirez (Borola) and Gilberto Garciakarate and judo, respectively, as well as Junior Paez (Jipy), from Fedombal.
