WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) encourages taxpayers to prepare now for the upcoming tax filing season by visiting IRS.gov/Prepare for tips on what’s new and what to keep in mind before filing your return. This is the first in a series of special reminders from the IRS to help taxpayers prepare in early 2026 for the upcoming tax filing season. A little pre-work preparing paperwork and organizing information can now help you file tax returns quickly and accurately.

It is important for taxpayers to prepare now as the Big, Beautiful Bill Act can significantly affect federal taxes, credits and deductions. The IRS and the Treasury Department are working to implement the legislation, including disseminating information about new tax deductions, such as the exemption from taxes on tips, overtime and auto loan interest, the new temporary deduction for seniors and others. The IRS will release new information as it becomes available.

Gather and organize your tax documents

Having their tax documents organized helps taxpayers file complete and accurate tax returns and avoid errors that could delay their refunds. Start by gathering:

  • Your bank account information.
  • W-2 forms from your employer(s).
  • 1099 forms from banks and other payers.
  • Digital asset transaction records.

Taxpayers should wait until they have received all of their tax documents to file their return. Keeping documents organized also makes it easier to find the information needed to claim deductions or credits.

IRS Online Account

An IRS online account allows taxpayers to securely access their personal tax information, including recently filed returns. Through this tool, taxpayers can:

  • View your tax records, including adjusted gross income and transcripts.
  • Make, schedule and consult payments.
  • Obtain or view your Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN).
  • Authorize a tax professional to digitally access your tax records.
  • Access available W-2 forms and certain 1099 forms.

Speed up your tax refund with direct deposit

Direct deposit is the fastest way to receive your refund. Additionally, in accordance with Executive Order 14247, the IRS began phasing out paper tax refund checks on September 30, 2025, meaning most taxpayers must provide their routing and account numbers to receive their refunds directly into their bank accounts.

Taxpayers without a bank account can learn how to open one at an FDIC-insured bank or through the National Credit Union Locator Tool. Veterans can consult the Veterans Benefits Banking Program for financial service options at participating banks.

Prepaid debit cards, digital wallets, or mobile apps may support direct deposit. To use these options, taxpayers must have the routing and account numbers associated with their personal accounts. Check with your mobile app provider or financial institution to confirm which numbers to use.
