Will Hollywood’s biggest party invite some crashers to the Oscar race?
The 2026 Golden Globes will be handed out Sunday, and mixed in among the usual suspects — your One Battle After Anothers, Sinners, Hamnets, Marty Supremes, Sentimental Values, and Frankensteins — are some wildcards, including Julia Roberts for After the Hunt and Dwayne Johnson for The Smashing Machine.
The Globes, now in their 83rd year, are known for tossing some curveballs into awards season, but overall, the Best Drama Film field has little, well, drama: Frankenstein, Hamnet, It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Valueand Sinners will compete for the top prize, with the latter being the favorite, per Gold Derby prediction data.
Things are weirder in the Best Musical/Comedy Film slate. With Wicked: For Good MIA, the field is a curiosity show, with such LOL-fests as One Battle After Another, Marty Supreme, Blue Moon, Bugonia, No Other Choiceand New wave vying for the honor. For what it’s worth, the One Battle juggernaut is expected to keep rolling.
With the films divvied up between two categories, there’s some difficulty in reading tea leaves for the Oscarswhich is why the Best Director category is one to watch tonight. Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another), Ryan Coogler (Sinners), Guillermo del Toro, (Frankenstein), Jafar Panahi (It Was Just an Accident), Joachim Trier (Sentimental Value), and Chloe Zhao (Hamnet) are all firmly in the Oscar mix, with Anderson considered the frontrunner.
