I completely understand your attraction to the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It sports a timeless style and has very interesting capabilities for a vehicle of this size. I don’t know if you plan to go off-road or tow, but those are features of the model.
Let’s talk about plug-in hybrid mechanics. During the test I did of the model A few years ago, I liked the general performance of the mechanics. It’s true, the electric range of around 40 kilometers is not very convincing, but the mechanics proved to be better suited in the Grand Cherokee than in the Wrangler, offering a better balance between performance and smoothness. The 375 horsepower are present when necessary, and the mechanical jolts are better managed than in the Wrangler. I even found that the 4xe was more convincing than the V8-powered Grand Cherokee that we tested at the show the year before.
However, I must note that the reliability statistics of this mechanic disappoint, in particular because of the complexity inherent in its configuration. Imagine: a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission in which there is an electric motor. Let’s not forget the other components installed in the vehicle, such as the air suspension (if equipped) or the electronic components, which do not have a reputation for being reliable. In short, it is the Achilles heel of this vehicle.
So, even if you get a good price for the model, I can’t recommend it. If you absolutely want to, a rental would be the least of evils, but know that this will not prevent visits to the garage, if necessary.
Des solutions alternatives
The best option for you, if you want a Grand Cherokee, would be to opt for a Laredo, Altitude or Limited model equipped with the 3.6-liter V6 engine. This antediluvian mechanism at least has the benefit of having proven its reliability and saves you some of the problems. Additionally, sticking to the three suggested models saves you from the complex and risky air suspension. And good news, they are also eligible for discounts from the manufacturer. Certainly, they will not be as generous as those applied to the plug-in hybrid model, but they still lower the price of the vehicle.
Let me make two suggestions that have a better reliability record, better reputation and better long-term value: Honda Passport 2026 et Toyota 4Runner. They are certainly more rational vehicles than the Jeep.
