The 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship will light up Ottawa from December 26 to January 5. Today, we delve into the Group A preliminary-round schedule and preview the teams set to compete.
USA Eyes Back-to-Back WJC Titles
Two first-round NHL draft picks, Ryan Leonard and Zeev Buium, are among the six NHL prospects hoping to lead the United States to its second straight WJC championship. This is uncharted territory for the team, which has never won back-to-back titles in the tournament’s history.
The U.S. triumphed in the 2024 WJC with a 6-2 victory against host Sweden in the gold-medal game. Their sixth tournament title and second in four years sets a high bar for expectations in Ottawa.
Team USA’s Champion Mentality
“[Having a chance to repeat] is probably the most important thing in the world, and we definitely have the team to do it,” Buium stated. “We obviously have the talent, and we’ve got a lot of guys who are willing to work hard, and a lot of guys who have won before too.”
Leonard, the spotlighted captain, was selected eighth overall by the Washington Capitals in the 2023 draft. He stands out with his impressive performance at Boston College, leading the Eagles with 12 goals in just 16 games. Buium, an alternate captain, was picked 12th by the Minnesota Wild in the 2024 draft and boasts 19 points and a +6 rating in 16 games for the University of Denver.
Additional NHL Draft Picks
Joining Leonard and Buium on the roster are several other top prospects fresh from the NHL draft. Forwards Trevor Connelly (Vegas Golden Knights, No. 19, 2024), Cole Eiserman (New York Islanders, No. 20, 2024), Oliver Moore (Chicago Blackhawks, No. 19, 2023), and Gabe Perreault (New York Rangers, No. 23, 2023) add star power to an already formidable lineup.
