Format and Scoring
The Castrol Rising Stars features 21 players, consisting of 10 rookies and 11 sophomores from NBA teams, along with seven players from the NBA G League. These players are divided into four teams, each coached by a legendary NBA player or Jeremy Lin for the G League team.
New for the 2025 event, the winning team advances to compete in the All-Star Game mini-tournament on February 16. The champion team earns the title of Team Candace, with WNBA legend Candace Parker serving as honorary GM.
Each semifinal game ends when a team reaches or surpasses 40 points. The championship game continues until a team reaches 25 points.
Selection Process
The players were selected through a ballot process involving NBA coaching staffs, who ranked players based on their preference for frontcourt, guard, and additional positions, excluding their own team members. Points were awarded based on ranking positions, and a player’s placement in the pool was based on total points.
The Coaches
This year’s Castrol Rising Stars features four honorary coaches, three of whom are Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famers. Tim Hardaway Sr., Chris Mullin, and Mitch Richmond, all former Golden State Warriors players, will lead three teams. Former NBA player and Warriors guard Jeremy Lin will coach the NBA G League team.
The assistant coaches from the NBA All-Star Game coaching staffs, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder, will also contribute to coaching the teams.
Why It Matters
The Castrol Rising Stars serves as a platform to highlight and nurture emerging talent in the NBA. It provides an opportunity for young players to compete and gain exposure to a broader audience, potentially impacting their careers and the Ultimate Team they could represent in the future.
The event not only showcases individual talent but also strengthens the bond and competitiveness among NBA players, fostering a sense of camaraderie and talent development.
