1.5°C Warming Goal: Hope Remains Even With Overshoot

Global Warming Could Exceed 1.5°C, But Recovery is absolutely possible

Even a temporary overshoot of the Paris Agreement’s temperature target will have lasting consequences, but aggressive action can still limit long-term harm.

the world is on track to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming, making it unlikely that the 2015 Paris agreement goal of limiting the average temperature increase to 1.5 degrees C will be met. Though, according to scientists, exceeding this threshold doesn’t mean the goal is unattainable. By intensifying efforts, the global temperature could be brought back down. This concept, known as overshoot-missing the target but then returning below it-presents both a warning and a potential path forward.

The warning is clear: even if warming is reduced to 1.5 degrees C before the end of the century, some losses will be irreversible. Ecosystems will be transformed, species will disappear, and vulnerable communities will suffer lasting consequences. Still, ensuring that the overshoot of 1.5 degrees C is temporary would minimize the damage and offer a chance for recovery.

Research suggests that limiting peak warming to well below two degrees C offers hope for future temperature reduction through net-negative emissions, where more carbon is removed from the atmosphere than emitted. Achieving net-zero emissions-a primary objective for many industrial countries-is no longer sufficient to limit warming to 1.5 degrees C.

Acknowledging that the threshold will be exceeded should not justify delaying action; instead, it demands acceleration. Each tenth of a degree of warming beyond 1.5 degrees C will inflict greater damage on the Earth and its inhabitants, making it more challenging to return to that level while adapting to a changing climate. While it’s a daunting prospect,it may be the best available option for mitigating long-term climate harm.

LIMITING BY HOW MUCH WE EXCEED 1.5°C REMAINS CRITICAL

Exceeding 1.5°C of global warming will result in greater impacts on humans and ecosystems.

Every tenth of a degree of warming beyond 1.5 degrees C will cause more damage to Earth and people.

EVEN THOUGH WE WILL EXCEED 1.5°C, WE COULD BRING TEMPERATURE BACK DOWN AGAIN IF THE OVERSHOOT IS NOT TOO HIGH

Overshoot is a trajectory in wich global temperature first exceeds a given threshold and later returns below it. The less overshoot we experience, the better.
