A new electric station wagon from China is shaking up the premium segment, with data that is likely to make even established German brands nervous.

A name that hardly anyone in Germany knows yet will openly oppose BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz in 2026. Zeekr, the young electric brand of the Geely Group, is bringing the 7 GT, a fully electric station wagon to Western Europe that combines sporty design, huge cargo space, long range and a noticeably low starting price. It is precisely this mix that could shake up the market.

Who is Zeekr – and why is everyone suddenly talking about it?

Zeekr has only existed since 2021 and is part of the Chinese car giant Geely, which also has a stake in Volvo and Polestar. So far, the brand has focused primarily on China, with initial quantities already running in Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Switzerland and several Eastern European countries.

Around 5,000 vehicles were newly registered in Europe in 2025 – a small number compared to the German majors, but a clear test run. Now the next step follows: entry into Western Europe, including Germany, Belgium and later also the French market. The heart of this offensive: the Zeekr 7 GT, a so-called shooting brake, i.e. a station wagon with a strong sporty line.

Sporty electric station wagon with everyday use

Visually, the 7 GT is clearly aimed at customers who can’t do anything with a normal family station wagon. Flat nose, narrow lights, long hood, sharply sloping rear – the whole thing is more reminiscent of a sports car than a classic commercial vehicle.

The 7 GT wants to change the image of the electric station wagon: away from a sensible purchase and towards an object of pleasure with a practical side.

Despite the dynamic shape, Zeekr promises a lot of space in the interior. This is mainly due to the wheelbase of 2.92 meters. The rear seats should remain comfortable even for tall adults, especially when it comes to leg and knee room. The trunk is exciting: 647 liters in the standard configuration, up to 1,737 liters with the rear seats folded down. The 7 GT thus approaches classic station wagons without adopting their staid appearance.

Premium equipment even in the base

Zeekr positions the 7 GT as “premium,” and the standard equipment matches that. The “Core RWD” version includes:

  • 15-inch OLED touchscreen in the center of the cockpit

  • Adaptiver Tempomat
  • Panoramic glass roof
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Electric tailgate
  • Heated front and rear seats and heated steering wheel

This is anything but self-evident in this class – especially when you consider the starting price, which is currently 49,990 euros in Belgium.

Up to 646 hp and a range of 655 kilometers

When it comes to propulsion, Zeekr brings out the big guns. The 7 GT comes in two performance levels: a version with 422 hp and a top variant with an impressive 646 hp. The manufacturer does not provide any technical data on acceleration in this description, but one thing is clear: This puts the car on a par with high-performance German electric sedans.

Depending on the version, batteries with a capacity of 75 or 100 kWh are located under the vehicle floor. With the large battery, Zeekr claims a range of up to 655 kilometers – according to Chinese standards, the values ​​are usually a little more optimistic than according to WLTP, but even with deductions, the value remains respectable.

With a range of 655 kilometers, the 7 GT surpasses the BMW i5 Touring and clearly positions itself as a long-distance electric vehicle for frequent drivers.

For comparison: BMW currently states around 602 kilometers for the i5 Touring in its best variants. The Chinese competition Denza Z9 GT is expected in the area of ​​500 kilometers. Zeekr deliberately sets an exclamation mark.

Fast charging on paper at a new level

Particularly noticeable: the maximum fast charging performance. The 7 GT should be able to pull up to 480 kW on a suitable high-power charger. According to the data sheet, that’s enough to bring the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 13 minutes – a value that leaves even many current premium electric cars behind.

There are also two comfort-relevant features that can make the difference in everyday life:

  • Built-in 22 kW onboard charger as standard for three-phase AC charging at home or at work
  • V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) function, which allows the car to power external devices, such as tools, camping equipment or e-bikes

The 22 kW charger in particular is still rare in Germany and makes charging at many public AC stations significantly faster.

Price shock for the German premium segment

The 7 GT currently starts at 49,990 euros in Belgium. Exact prices for Germany are not yet available, but they are likely to end up in a similar corridor. With this, Zeekr is attacking station wagons and large sedans from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz head-on, which are noticeably more expensive with comparable performance and range.

With this price positioning, Zeekr is primarily targeting customers who have previously been put off by premium electric cars because of their high costs, but still want more than just a simple electric car.

How good is “Premium” from China really?

The big open question is not about the data sheets, but about the perceived quality. Inside, Zeekr promises a high-quality material mix with clean workmanship. The brand is trying to consciously distance itself from the cheap image that many people still have in mind when they hear the word China car.

Several factors play a role for German buyers:

  • How high-quality do the materials, switches and seats feel?
  • How smoothly do software, infotainment and assistance systems work?
  • How reliable is the car in the long term – keyword warranty and workshop network?

Geely has already shown with Volvo and Polestar that it understands European requirements. Initial tests in Germany will have to show whether Zeekr reaches or even exceeds this level.

What the 7 GT means for electric drivers in practice

For many interested parties, the question is less “China yes or no” and more: What does this car do for me in everyday life? An electric station wagon with a range of more than 600 kilometers and a large trunk pretty much meets the needs of families, field workers and long-distance commuters.

A few examples from practice:

  • Family vacation with luggage and bikes without constantly having to fight with the range display
  • Business trips across Germany with just a short charging stop
  • Use of the vehicle as a mobile power storage device, for example at the campsite or at outdoor events via V2L

In addition, a 22 kW charger at home in the garage or at the company headquarters significantly shortens downtime. If you plug it in in the evening, you will almost always start with a full battery in the morning – even in winter.

Opportunities and risks for buyers in Germany

On the plus side, the Zeekr 7 GT has a strong data sheet, extensive standard equipment, a large interior and a comparatively low price in the premium segment. The car therefore offers a real alternative for everyone who previously had to choose between an “expensive premium electric car” and a “compromising bread-and-butter electric car”.

Risks lie more in the lack of experience with the brand: How quickly can spare parts be procured? How dense will the service network be in Germany? And how stable does the value of a vehicle from a new brand that is still unknown here remain? If you keep these points in mind and wait for the first practical experiences and test reports, you can get a much better picture.

One thing is certain: With the 7 GT, Zeekr is not only attacking BMW, but the entire comfort zone of the German premium car market. If the promises regarding range, charging performance and quality keep what the numbers suggest, the name Zeekr should appear much more often on German roads in the coming years.
