A Fusion of Sound and Scenery: Whomadewho’s Odyssey in Mexico
The Danish experimental music group, Whomadewho, recently captivated audiences in Mexico City with their distinctive blend of electronic music, live instrumentation, and evocative vocals. Their performance was part of Cercle’s Odyssey series, known for showcasing artists in exceptional locations.
The Allure of mexico: Energy, Culture, and Connection
According to drummer Tomas Barfod, mexico holds a special appeal for the band. He emphasized the vibrant energy shared between the culture, the audience, and the band, noting the presence of exceptional cuisine, welcoming people, and stunning natural and architectural landscapes. The video of their performance is slated for release on Cercle’s YouTube channel this Saturday.
Culture and the public, everyone has an overlapping energy. Everywhere we go, there is good food and good people, and also beautiful nature and architecture.

Whomadewho’s Sonic Signature: A Blend of Electronic and Acoustic Elements
Whomadewho’s music is characterized by its profound and poetic lyrics, seamlessly interwoven with electronic beats and the organic textures of acoustic instruments. This fusion creates a dynamic and immersive sonic experience.
Recent Works and Live Performances
Their latest album, Kiss & Forget (2024), and their recent single, Tripolism, were prominently featured in their Odyssey concert in Mexico, showcasing the band’s evolving sound and commitment to live performance.
The Genesis of a sound: Bridging Electronic and live Music
Barfod explained that the band’s inception was rooted in the vision of merging electronic music with live instruments, a concept that remains central to their artistic identity. This approach allows them to create a concert experience that oscillates between the high-energy atmosphere of a club and the emotional depth of melodic pop music.
The beginning of the band was in fact the vision of combining electronic music with live instruments; that has always been in our DNA… I think we find the perfect combination in which we have the energy of the club and people can be lost in the beats, but we also have these pop vowels and more melodic elements. If you come to a concert from us you can go everywhere, you can be like in a rave, but you can also here beautiful letters and songs.

A Decade of Connection: Whomadewho and Mexico
Whomadewho’s relationship with Mexico stretches back over a decade, marked by a memorable performance at the Corona Capital Festival. Vocalist Jeppe Kjellberg recalled the keen reception, which solidified their desire to return to mexico.
It was full and it was crazy… from there we said, let’s go to Mexico.

“I Don’t No”: An Ode to Guadalajara
An incident involving passport issues in Guadalajara inspired the song I Don’t Know, which humorously recounts their experience of being temporarily detained. Ironically, the song’s creation led to increased opportunities and successful performances in Mexico, making it a staple of their concerts.
The Mexican Audience: A Source of inspiration
Barfod lauded the Mexican audience for their positivity and enthusiastic support, describing their energy as an invigorating “waterfall of energy.” This connection fuels the band’s desire to perform in the country.
The mentality of the Mexican people is very positive, it encourages you a lot and are very loud, they give you a lot when you touch, so it is really a pleasure to come.

Odyssey: A Resounding Success
The Odyssey performance, attended by 5,000 people, was particularly well-received due to its “no-cellphone policy,” encouraging full engagement with the music and the experience. The event featured massive screens and special guests Tripolism, adding to the immersive atmosphere.
Cercle Collaboration: A Catalyst for Growth
Whomadewho’s previous collaboration with Cercle in Egypt in 2021 proved to be a pivotal moment in their career, significantly boosting their profile and opening new opportunities. This successful partnership made their return for the odyssey series a natural and highly anticipated decision.
We made a film with Cercle in 2021 in Egypt and it was very vital, it really exploded our career and everything was very good after that, so Cercle has always been very close and has been very important for us… When they told us that if we wanted to return and make another recording of the show, we were 100% convinced that it was going to be superspecial.

Global Reach: Odyssey’s Next Stops
Following the Mexico City concerts, which also featured artists like Ben Böhmer, Jungle, Rawayana, monolink, and The Blaze, the Odyssey series is set to travel to Los angeles and Paris, each with its own unique lineup.
Upcoming Performances and Creative Synergy
Whomadewho, also featuring bassist Tomas Hoffding, has a busy schedule ahead, with performances planned at festivals and venues in Egypt, Doha, Dubai, Mykonos, Ibiza, Lisbon, Monaco, Germany, and Italy. The band emphasizes the positive impact of their live performances on their studio work, creating a cyclical relationship between DJ sets, studio sessions, and live shows.
It’s like a kind of circle that feeds between presenting us as DJs, the study and live… Sometimes we make a song in the studio and try it as DJs and then some things that we do as DJs take them to the live show; we tried everything and then we return to the studio and change it a bit, everything is connected.
