WHO Donates Ebola Trial Vaccine to Uganda Amid Recent Outbreak
KAMPALA, Uganda – In a significant step towards addressing the ongoing Ebola crisis, the World Health Organization (WHO) has donated 2,160 doses of a trial vaccine to Uganda. This donation aims to evaluate the vaccine’s effectiveness in combating the deadly virus, which has claimed a health worker’s life in the country’s capital.
Partnerships and Coordination
The WHO is collaborating closely with Uganda’s Ministry of Health, the Makerere University Lung Institute, and the Ugandan Virus Research Institute. In addition to these local partners, they are working with international experts and regulators. Their goal is to initiate the necessary trials to determine the vaccine’s efficacy.
Declaration of Ebola Outbreak
On Thursday, Uganda’s Ministry of Health officially declared an Ebola outbreak. The announcement came after a 32-year-old male nurse succumbed to Sudan Ebola virus disease (SVD) at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala. This tragic event marks the eighth Ebola outbreak in East Africa.
Objective of the Vaccine Trial
According to the WHO, the primary aim of the vaccine trial is to evaluate the potential effectiveness of a new candidate vaccine. If proven efficacious, this vaccine could help to end the current outbreak and offer protection against future SVD risks. The trial is targeting individuals at the highest risk of SVD infection, particularly close contacts of confirmed or deceased cases.
The Facts on Sudan Virus
It’s important to note that there are currently no approved treatments or vaccines specifically for Sudan virus. However, early initiation of supportive care has been shown to reduce mortality rates from SVD. In previous outbreaks, the case fatality rate of Sudan virus disease has ranged from 41% to 100%.
Preparation for Vaccine Trial
The process of setting up the vaccine trial includes several key steps. These include orienting research teams on trial procedures and arranging necessary logistics. Research teams are already on the ground, working alongside surveillance teams, pending final approvals.
WHO’s Role in the Outbreak Response
Earlier, a WHO committee of external experts reviewed candidate vaccines and recommended suitable ones for evaluation in Uganda. This review process helped in selecting the vaccine for the ongoing clinical trial.
The Future of Ebola Control
The recent donation of Ebola trial vaccine doses represents a hopeful step forward in the battle against SVD. By supporting Uganda in these critical vaccine trials, the WHO is taking proactive measures to address the persistent threats of Ebola in the region.
