Anyone who regularly uses WhatsApp for calls knows the problem: as soon as you are out and about, your intelligibility is massively impaired by traffic, wind or other loud ambient noises. The messenger now wants to solve exactly this annoying everyday problem with a new function that was discovered in a current beta version for smartphones.
New WhatsApp feature in the works
The innovation is called Noise Cancellation – intelligent noise suppression. As the website WABetaInfo reports, the feature should be able to identify and filter out annoying background noise during a voice or video call. The result: your vote will much clearer and more present for the conversation partnerwhile the surrounding noise fades into the background.
This development is a big step forward, especially for Android users. While iPhone owners have long been able to rely on a system-specific function called voice isolation, which also filters noise during WhatsApp calls, there has so far been no comparable built-in solution for Android devices. Every background noise was inevitably transmitted here.
With the upcoming update, WhatsApp will close this gap. Noise cancellation should be activated by default on Android devices as soon as a call begins, which will be informed by a short display. Important: The processing of the audio data takes place exclusively locally on your own device; the proven end-to-end encryption of the calls remains unaffected (source: WABetaInfo).
Telegram and Discord are one step ahead of WhatsApp
This means that the messenger not only matches the functionality on the iPhone, but also keeps up with it Competitors like Telegram or Discordwhich already offer similar technologies. The feature is currently being rolled out gradually to participants in the beta program. A date for when it will be available to everyone is still pending.
