From Physics Lab to Concert Stage: A Unique role for “Prof Stars of Social”

Vincenzo Schettini, the 48-year-old physics professor celebrated as the “Prof Stars of Social” for his engaging science popularization, joined Noemi, Ermal Meta, and Big Mama as a host at Rome’s annual May Day Concert in piazza San Giovanni. Known for his ability to make complex physics concepts accessible and captivating, Schettini’s presence added a distinctive dimension to the conventional labor day event.

Bridging Science and culture: “Cultural Excursions” on a National Stage

Schettini’s role at the concert involved delivering “cultural excursions,” aiming to integrate elements of science and knowledge into the day’s proceedings. During a preview segment on Rai Tre, he engaged the audience with a mini-quiz blending music and physics, showcasing his innovative approach to education.

He emphasized the importance of knowledge in today’s world, particularly for young people entering the workforce. Young people must understand that the opportunities that will project them into the world of work… will increase, they will multiply, the more it will be critically important for them to get to know, acquire knowledge, experience, Schettini stated, highlighting the concert as a platform to promote lifelong learning.

The Rise of a Science Communicator: From YouTube to national Television

Schettini’s journey began in Como, with roots in Apulia, before establishing himself in the bari region. A physics graduate from the University of Bari, he initially taught physics in high schools. His foray into online education started in 2015 with the YouTube channel “The physics we like,” where he shared short, engaging videos of physics experiments with clear and playful explanations. This initiative quickly gained traction, leading to a strong presence on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

His success in science communication lead to the publication of several books and, in 2024, to hosting “The physics of love,” a TV program on Rai 2.The show, wich aired in the late evening for two seasons comprising fifteen episodes, further solidified his role as a prominent figure in Italian science popularization.

A Passion for Music and Education

Beyond physics, Schettini is also a trained musician, having graduated in violin and music education from the Monopoly Conservatory. This passion for the arts complements his scientific pursuits, allowing him to connect with audiences on multiple levels.

Schettini publicly came out in 2015, sharing his personal story through a widely viewed video on his social media channels, further demonstrating his commitment to authenticity and openness.

Reflecting on his participation in the May Day Concert, schettini expressed a mix of excitement and anticipation. For me to be on the stage of the concert DL May 1st is a crazy,beautiful,overwhelming emotion,he shared. He also acknowledged the anxiety that comes with such a significant opportunity,viewing it as a catalyst for creativity and the desire to convey meaningful messages.

I know that a beautiful anxiety will take me, an anxiety of creativity, an anxiety of desire to give messages… Because anxiety is also beautiful. It also serves to get a move. Newton says it: we move from inertia. So surely a crazy experience.
