Vikings Make Roster Moves Ahead of Trade Deadline
The Minnesota Vikings made two key moves to their special teams unit, adding veteran long snapper Beau McQuaide and releasing kicker Greg Joseph. These changes come on the heels of a right hand injury sustained by Joseph during the Vikings’ game against the Indianapolis Colts.
A Seasoned Replacement Arrives
McQuaide, a veteran of 200 games, brings valuable experience to the Vikings. In his 14 years in the NFL, he’s played with several teams, including the Rams, where he overlapped with current Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell in 2020. This familiarity could be a significant advantage as the team navigates the transition. McQuaide’s experience in the NFC North, having spent time with the Lions and Bears, also gives him a head start in understanding the division’s dynamic.
A Challenging Task for Coach Daniels
Vikings special teams coordinator, Matt Daniels, faces a challenge in integrating McQuaide and finding a suitable replacement for Joseph.
"It’s tough," Daniels acknowledged, "especially when it’s at the kicker and snapper position because that requires the most [synchrony]. … But that’s why you get labeled the title of coach."
The importance of synchronicity between kicker and snapper cannot be overstated; its impact on the success of field goals and extra points is undeniable.
Vikings Remain Quiet on Trade Deadline
Despite the special teams shakeup, the Vikings did not make any other significant moves before the NFL trade deadline. This indicates a strong belief in their current roster, with recent additions like tackle Cam Robinson and running back Cam Akers.
Coach O’Connell expressed openness to potential moves, stating, “If there’s an opportunity to improve our team, or there’s an opportunity to improve our ability to build the team in the future, I think it’s something we’ll consider.”
However, the team seems content to remain focused on their current roster and continue their pursuit of playoff contention.
