Could Your Diet Be Fueling Colorectal Cancer?

New research published in Gut reveals a shocking link between ultra-processed foods and the development of colorectal cancer. Scientists funded by the National Institutes of Health have found that diets high in processed foods can hinder the body’s natural healing processes, allowing cancer to flourish.

The Inflammation Connection

"It is well known that patients with unhealthy diets have increased inflammation in their bodies," explains Dr. Timothy Yeatman, a leading physician-scientist involved in the study. “We now see this inflammation in the colon tumors themselves, and cancer is like a chronic wound that won’t heal. If your body is living off of daily ultra-processed foods, its ability to heal that wound decreases due to the inflammation and suppression of the immune system that ultimately allows the cancer to grow."

Tiny Molecules, Big Impact

The research team focused on bioactive lipids, small molecules derived from the food we consume. While they are difficult to detect, researchers discovered an imbalance of these molecules in tumor samples. Tumors showed an excess of inflammatory lipids and a shortage of those that promote healing.

Ganesh Halade, associate professor at the USF Health Heart Institute, explains, "Our bodies are designed to actively resolve inflammation through bioactive lipid compounds derived from healthy fats, like avocados, that we consume. Bioactive lipids are very small molecules derived from the foods that we eat and, if the molecules are coming from processed food products, they directly imbalance the immune system and drive chronic inflammation.”

A Natural Approach: Resolution Medicine

This groundbreaking study opens doors to a promising new approach called resolution medicine. Instead of solely focusing on drugs, resolution medicine aims to restore balance by harnessing the body’s natural healing mechanisms through diet.

Dr. Yeatman emphasizes, "This has the potential to revolutionize cancer treatment, moving beyond drugs to harness natural healing processes. It’s a vital step toward addressing chronic inflammation and preventing diseases before they start."

Foods to Embrace and Avoid

The research highlights the importance of choosing unprocessed foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and other beneficial compounds.

Examples of healthy, unprocessed foods:

  • Crab
  • Salmon
  • Halibut
  • Spinach
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Seaweed
  • Algae
  • Grass-fed, pasture-raised meats

Examples of ultra-processed foods:

  • Ice cream
  • Sausages
  • Chips
  • Mass-produced bread
  • Breakfast cereals
  • Doughnuts
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Instant soups
  • Some alcoholic drinks
