President Lee Jae-myung, who is on a state visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said on the 17th (local time), “Our country also needs to advance into Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, and the UAE will be able to serve as a base camp in the Middle East.”
President Lee announced this after arriving in Abu Dhabi on this day, visiting the Grand Mosque, and holding a dinner meeting with compatriots.
President Lee said, “There are many similarities between the UAE and the Republic of Korea,” adding, “It is a position that acts as a kind of bridge in geopolitical terms, but it can also be seen as a small country that does not have much and is sandwiched between powerful countries.”
President Lee mentioned the commonalities between the two countries. He said, “Korea is the only country liberated from colonial rule to achieve industrialization and to become a democratic country. It is an enormous growth that will be recorded in human history.” President Lee also said of the UAE, “It is a truly great country,” and added, “Why do we not invest in renewable energy, nuclear energy, and cutting-edge science and technology when we can build wealth without any worries by selling golden oil?”
President Lee said, “The two countries should go beyond being brother countries and develop into a kind of economic community that conducts research and production together and advances into the third world together,” adding, “The two countries will join hands to clearly open a new path to common prosperity.”
President Lee said, “I tried to look at the UAE fighter planes that were escorting (Air Force Unit 1), but they were obscured by the wings and I couldn’t see them. Instead, when I looked down, I saw solar panels spread out in the desert.” President Lee said, “Just as the old world becomes a disaster, the barren land is transformed into fertile soil,” and “a new world is opening up.”
The illegal martial law of December 3 was also indirectly mentioned.
At the meeting that day, President Lee said, “About a year ago, there was something that surprised the world, asking, ‘Why is that country like this?’ and ‘Could it have happened in the North or the South?’”
President Lee continued, “After that, you say, ‘You’re saying they easily subdue them with a light stick and a smile?'” He added, “Without raising a gun or using violence, we are beautifully restoring the situation to its original state through the power of the people and moving forward on our own path. This is the strength of our Republic of Korea.”
President Lee promised to the compatriots who attended the meeting, “From now on, you will be proud to be a citizen of the Republic of Korea,” and “The Republic of Korea will be your strong backing.”
In his greeting, Jang Gwang-deok, president of the UAE Korean Association, said, “I feel proud every time I hear people say, ‘I can trust you because you are Korean.’ I will do my best as a private diplomat for the prosperity of both countries.”
Lee Yoon-jin, principal of Dubai Korean School, also said, “Despite difficult circumstances, we will preserve education about Korea’s roots and become a small light that conveys the dignity of Korea to the world.”
