Cans with chickpeas, beans or lentils have been banned by the European Union. In particular those in which Bisphenol A (BPA) is present, a substance that Europe has banned in all materials in contact with food starting from January 2025. Despite the new regulation, it is still possible to find it on the market, because companies have until 2028 to adapt.

But energy drinks are also under attack. According to the analysis conducted by Öko-Test, a German consumer magazine that monthly tests every type of product on the market, it analyzed 22 energy drinks in the laboratory, detecting the presence of bisphenol A used in the internal linings of cans in 90% of the drinks. According to the results of the analysis, for 14 of the 22 energy drinks, a 60 kg teenager consuming one 250 ml can per day would exceed 100% of the tolerable daily dose. For another 6 products it reaches over 50%.

What are the risks? And which products to avoid? The answers from Matteo Bassetti, Director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the San Martino Polyclinic in Genoa.
