Judges Push Back Against Criticism From Trump Administration

By Amelia Harper | WASHINGTON, D.C. – 2025/08/29 07:50:30

This week,U.S. District Judge Thomas Cullen published strong criticism regarding the Trump administration’s “organised actions” that denounce federal judges and carry out personal attacks.

In a ruling on the 26th, the judge, appointed under the first trump administration, wrote, “The comments made by senior government officials who slander and slander and slander the judges who challenged the president’s policies are unprecedented and regrettable.”

He quoted expressions used to attack judges such as “activist,” “radical,” “rogue,” and “uncommon.”

The criticism was a footnote in the ruling, but it is unusual for a federal judge to openly criticize the administration. Federal judges should comply with the code of ethics and refrain from making statements that could be perceived as political.

As Trump and senior administration officials’ actions towards judges escalate, voices have begun to rise from some judges defending themselves, their colleagues, and the independence of the judicial system.

Some, like Judge Karen, show positions for defending judges in their sentences, while others speak to legal groups and attend online streaming events to talk about the growing threat surrounding the judiciary.

Judge Karen did not specify who said the words cited in the ruling. However, Trump has used some of the expressions Judge Karen mentioned in the past in social media posts, such as “smack” and “radical.”

The administration’s criticism was shown in a ruling in a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department against all federal district judges in Maryland. The Justice department has filed a lawsuit over a new court policy to temporarily suspend deportation in immigration cases.

Judge karen rejected the Justice Department’s appeal and criticized the administration’s response, saying, “Instead of following the usual procedures to challenge court orders, they filed a lawsuit that could have an unusual and serious effect.”

The Department of Justice has appealed this decision, dissatisfied. A justice Department spokesman declined to comment.

White House Press Secretary Jackson criticized Judge Karen’s decision, saying it “tolerates a direct attack on the president’s authority to enforce immigration law.” “the Trump administration is confident that it will be a final victory.”
