A tragic plane crash near Washington, D.C., on Wednesday evening has left an indelible mark on the figure skating community. The mishap, resulting from a collision between an American Airlines flight and a Black Hawk military helicopter, led to the deaths of 60 passengers and four crew members aboard the commercial flight, along with all three soldiers on the military aircraft.
Among the victims were two young and promising figure skaters, Spencer Lane and Jinna Han, alongside their mothers, Christine Lane and Jin Han, and their coaches, Vadim Naumov and Evgenia Shishkova. The Skating Club of Boston confirmed their presence on the flight, highlighting the devastating impact on this close-knit community.
Lane, a 2025 intermediate eastern sectional champion, had shared his excitement about attending a national development camp in Wichita, Kansas, which he had been working towards since qualifying earlier that year. His experiences and passion had made him a popular figure on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, amassing thousands of followers.
“I am so happy to have qualified for national development camp earlier in November, it has been my goal almost ever since I became aware that it was a thing,” Lane had written in a post just hours before takeoff. A screenshot from his Instagram story, showing a plane wing with airport codes for Wichita and Washington, provides a poignant glimpse into his last moments.

Jinna Han, another victim, was described as an Olympic hopeful in media reports. She had recently placed second in the Novice Women’s Short Program at the 2025 Eastern Sectional Singles Final, representing the Skating Club of Boston. Her talent and potential had gained her attention within the figure skating world.
The tragic incident has left the Skating Club of Boston devastated. Doug Zeghibe, the CEO of the club, expressed his grief at a press conference, stating, “This will have long, reaching impacts for our skating community.” He also drew a parallel to a previous tragedy in 1961 when the entire U.S. delegation was lost in a plane crash en route to the world championships in Prague.
Naumov and Shishkova, coaches from the Boston club, have been integral to the development of numerous skaters since arriving in the U.S. after winning the 1994 pairs world championship. Their loss represents a significant setback for the sport. Zeghibe emphasized the invaluable contribution these coaches had made, saying, “When you lose coaches like this, you lose the future of the sport as well.”
Other victims included Inna Volanskaya, a coach at the Ashburn Ice House in Virginia, and Asra Hussain Raza, a 26-year-old consultant with a background in public health. Their families and friends have been left to grapple with the unimaginable loss.
Tim Lilley, the father of Sam Lilley, the first officer on the flight, confirmed his son’s death in a heartbreaking Facebook post. He wrote, “Now it hurts so bad I can’t even cry myself to sleep. I know I’ll see him again, but my heart is breaking.”
Ian Epstein, a flight attendant, was also among the casualties. His wife Debi shared her deep sorrow in a post, urging, “Please pray for Ian and our family as we travel to DC.”
Amidst the chaos and sorrow, stories of these individuals highlight the ripple effects of such tragedies. Loudoun County Public Schools released a statement expressing its condolences, noting that multiple victims were former students of the district.
As the community continues to mourn, authorities have provided few details about the cause of the crash, though the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have launched a comprehensive investigation.
The impact of this disaster extends far beyond the immediate victims, affecting the broader figure skating community and beyond. Coaches, skaters, and families remain in mourning, as they remember the talent and potential that was abruptly cut short.
In the words of Anika Hansford, a coach from the Ashburn Ice House, “All I can say is these skaters were our future stars of U.S. figure skating. These skaters trained for years everyday to achieve their dreams with a coach who truly loved them and believed in them.”
As the nation reflects on this tragedy, the stories of these individuals bring a sense of closure and remembrance. They remind us of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing each moment.
For those seeking support, local and national resources for grief counseling are available. In memory of the victims, the Skating Club of Boston has established a fund to support the skaters and their families. Contributions can be made through their official website.
May the memories of Spencer Lane, Jinna Han, Vadim Naumov, Evgenia Shishkova, Inna Volanskaya, and Asra Hussain Raza bring comfort to their loved ones and serve as a reminder of the joy and passion they brought to the world of figure skating.
