Strategic Timing: Navigating US-China Trade Dynamics

The decision to expand advertising on Threads arrives at a crucial juncture, amidst escalating trade tensions between the United States and China.Meta, heavily reliant on advertising revenue from platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, faces potential financial headwinds.

Industry analysts suggest that these trade disputes could substantially impact Meta’s advertising sales. For example, MoffettNathanson projects a potential decrease of up to $7 billion in Meta’s online advertising revenue this year. this projection is based on the anticipation that Chinese e-commerce firms may curtail their advertising expenditures due to the ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Threads’ Growth Trajectory and Future Outlook

Despite the external economic pressures, Threads has demonstrated impressive growth. CEO Mark Zuckerberg reported in January that the platform was gaining over one million new subscribers daily.

We have more than 1 million new subscribers every day… I think threads will continue to grow into a leading discussion platform in the next few years.

Zuckerberg’s optimistic outlook is tempered by a cautious approach to advertising implementation. Meta’s CFO, Susan Li, indicated in January that the introduction of advertising on Threads would be a gradual process, ensuring a balanced user experiance.

The platform’s rapid user acquisition, coupled with a strategic approach to monetization, positions Threads as a significant player in the evolving social media landscape. As of Q1 2025, social media advertising spending is projected to reach $173 billion globally, highlighting the immense potential for platforms like Threads to capture a substantial market share. The global expansion of advertising on Threads represents a calculated move by Meta to tap into this growing market, even amidst challenging geopolitical circumstances.
