This supermoon approached Earth at about 357,000 kilometers closer than usual, which amplified its size and brightness; however, the size of the celestial body remains the same, it’s just that there is a difference in the point of view, with the change of its distance at the perigee that the Moon optically appears larger than usual full moons. The Moon’s proximity to Earth makes it appear larger and more luminous, providing a stunning sight for observers. The Moon reached its closest point, or perigee, on November 5 at 6:49 PM IST, which gave a fantastic opportunity for skywatchers to witness this magnificent event, which was visible just after sunset and remained brightly lit throughout the night, especially when the Moon was low on the horizon and glowing with a rich, golden hue.

Why Supermoon?
The term “supermoon” was popularised in 1979 by astrologer Richard Nolle and is technically called a perigee-syzygy moon. When the full moon coincides with its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, it appears significantly larger and brighter than usual, although the difference may not be immediately noticeable to the naked eye, as said by Sky at Night Magazine.
This Supermoon was also called the Beaver Moon
The Beaver Moon gets its name from traditional observations that it coincides with beavers preparing for winter by building dams. This year the Beaver moon coincided with Kartik Poornima which is an important festival for Hindus and also the Sikh communities across the world as they celebrate the birthday of Guru Nanak Singh Dev ji.
When can you spot the next Supermoon this year?
Every year we get a chance to witness about 12-13 full moons; however, out of which only 3 or 4 are Supermoons. In 2025, skygazers had a chance to witness at least 3 Supermoons out of which this was the second one.

Cold Moon 2025
The Cold Moon is the full moon that occurs in December, marking the arrival of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. It is named for the cold temperatures and long nights typical of this time. In 2025, the Cold Moon will be on December 4, and it will also be the last supermoon of the year, appearing 7.9% larger and 15% brighter than a regular full moon. The Cold Moon historically helped ancient peoples track seasonal changes and is a symbol of the harsh winter ahead.
