Justice Delayed? Calls to Expedite Óscar Romero Murder Trial After 45 Years
A Stalled Pursuit of Justice for Archbishop Romero
Human rights lawyers in El Salvador are urging the courts to accelerate the criminal proceedings against those allegedly responsible for the assassination of Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero. The renewed calls come 45 years after his death in 1980 [[[1]], with advocates expressing frustration over the slow pace of the inquiry.
the stagnation of the process, the lack of investigation and proceedings useful in the case.

The Assassination and Initial Investigation
Óscar Romero, a vocal advocate for the poor and marginalized, was murdered on March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass at a chapel in san salvador [[[1]]. A 1993 UN Truth Commission report identified Major Roberto D’Aubuisson, founder of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), as the individual who gave the order for the assassination. The report also implicated several military officers, including Captain Álvaro Saravia, in the planning and execution of the crime.
Legal Maneuvering and Reopened Wounds
The case was reopened in May 2017 by the Fourth Instruction Court of San Salvador, and in October 2018, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) was instructed to conduct a new investigation. This reopening was made possible by the 2016 Supreme court’s decision to overturn a 1993 amnesty law. this ruling also paved the way for reinvestigations into other meaningful human rights violations during El Salvador’s civil war, including the El Mozote massacre (1981) and the murder of six Jesuit priests (1989). however, progress in these cases has been slow.
Frustration Over Lack of Progress
Despite the court’s order, human rights lawyers claim that the Prosecutor’s Office has made little to no progress in recent years. Alejandro Díaz, a lawyer with the ‘María Julia Hernández’ legal protection organization, voiced concerns about the lack of data and the absence of updates regarding the ongoing investigation.
Unfortunately, the Prosecutor’s Office has done nothing in recent years and we do not no information, no response has been given about who is being investigated to what investigations he has done.
Díaz and other advocates are now urging the court to move the case to the trial phase, asserting that sufficient evidence exists against Captain Álvaro saravia and other implicated individuals.
Romero’s Legacy: From Martyrdom to Sainthood
Óscar Romero’s assassination transformed him into a symbol of resistance and a martyr for social justice. he was beatified in May 2015 [[[1]] and canonized by Pope Francis in October 2018 [[[2]], solidifying his place as a saint in the Catholic Church. His canonization was based on the recognition of a miracle attributed to him, further cementing his legacy as a figure of profound spiritual significance.
The Ongoing Quest for Accountability
While Romero’s canonization brought solace to many, the pursuit of justice for his murder remains a critical issue. The slow progress in the case highlights the challenges of addressing ancient injustices and holding perpetrators accountable, even decades after the crimes were committed. the call to expedite the trial reflects a continued commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring that those responsible for Romero’s death are brought to justice.
