Canberra: Former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey said that if he had made his debut in international cricket earlier, he would have surpassed Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar in runs. Dubbed as Mr Cricket, Hussey made his debut for Australia at the age of 29. Hussey was speaking on the Grade Cricketer podcast on YouTube.

Before joining the Aussie national team, Hussey was a well-known player in domestic cricket. After making his debut for Aussies, the star has been a consistent performer in all formats. The player played for Aussies for only eight years.

During the interview, Hussey compared himself to Sachin Tendulkar’s record after saying that his cricket numbers would have been different if he had been given the chance to debut earlier. “I’ve thought about it a lot. I would have scored nearly 5,000 runs more than Sachin Tendulkar, the highest run scorer. Most centuries, most wins, most Ashes wins, most World Cup wins, probably all of them. And, unfortunately, when I wake up in the morning it’s just a dream. I would have been very happy if I had had the opportunity earlier. But the good thing was that I had a better understanding of my game when I was selected,” Hussey said.

Hussey has scored 12,398 runs in all formats in his international career. Hussey has scored 6235 runs including 19 centuries from 79 Tests, 5442 runs including three centuries from 185 ODIs and 721 runs from 38 T20 matches.

Sachin made his debut at the age of 16 and continued in international cricket for 24 years. Sachin Tendulkar has 15,921 runs from 200 Tests and 18,426 runs from 463 ODIs. With 51 centuries in Tests and 49 centuries in ODIs, Sachin is the only player to have scored 100 centuries in international cricket.

Hussey’s records in domestic cricket are staggering. The player has scored nearly 23,000 runs from 273 matches at an average of 52 runs. It also includes 61 centuries.
