Robert Downey Jr. Warns of Future AI Executions: "I Intend to Sue All Future Executives"

Robert Downey Jr., in a recent episode of the "On With Kara Swisher" podcast, made waves by expressing his stark opposition to the idea of being digitally recreated through AI or deepfakes. An Oscar-winning actor known for his iconic roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Downey took a firm stance on the topic, voicing his intentions to legally challenge any future executives who attempt to use his likeness in such a manner.

"I Feel Minimally": Downey’s Perspective on AI Digital Replication

When queried about the prospect of being digitally recreated, Downey responded, "There’s two tracks. How do I feel about everything that’s going on? I feel about it minimally because I have an actual emotional life that’s occurring that doesn’t have a lot of room for that."

His indifference, however, emanates more from a concern for his personal privacy and integrity rather than disregarding the rapid advancements in AI technology. He believes this tech might unsettle his public persona, potentially demeaning his existing roles. Downey’s perspective on AI incorporates a blend of unpredictability, skepticism, and a keen focus on ethics in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Confidence in MCU Leadership

In relation to his role as Iron Man within the MCU, Downey expressed confidence that his character would not be recreated through AI. "To go back to the MCU, I am not worried about them hijacking my character’s soul because there’s like three or four guys and gals who make all the decisions there anyway and they would never do that to me, with or without me," he explained.

The MCU, one of the largest film franchises in history, is overseen by a select group of savvy decision-makers who understand and respect the established roles and performances, according to Downey. Therefore, he does not anticipate the AI replication of his iconic characters, ensuring his legacy and the continuity of these established roles remain intact.

"I Intend to Sue All Future Executives"

Host Kara Swisher’s prediction that future executives will lean towards AI-recreated personas was met with a forceful response from Downey, "[I] intend to sue all future executives just on spec.”

His commitment to legal action against any misuse of his likeness via AI serves as a clear deterrent. Such a determination not only safeguards his professional integrity but also sets a precedent for other performers who might be similarly at risk.

Confronting AI Ethics in Broadway Play

Beyond his disagreements with the use of AI in the film industry, Downey is tackling AI ethics in his latest Broadway show, "McNeal." The play aims to unmask the complexities of large tech companies and their respective leaders in the AI domain. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and other corporate figures are depicted as arrogant arbiters of AI technology, creating an environment where truth and ethical responsibility are often compromised.

Return to Marvel: Docter Doom

While Downey is backing away from the MCU as Iron Man, he will nonetheless be returning to the universe but in a new avatar. He will play the villainous Dr. Doom in the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday," set to release in 2026. This transition emphasizes his commitment to human interaction and personal interpretation, stepping away from AI digital replicas for a new, refined villainous role.
