Seven weeks post-birth, babies were assessed using the Brazelton’s Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) to evaluate reflexes, motor abilities, and social responses, providing insights into early developmental outcomes.

Using advanced sequencing technology, the researchers studied epigenetic changes in large DNA sections, offering a detailed view of how the placenta reacts to maternal stress.

The findings indicate that stress early in pregnancy may have the strongest impact on these epigenetic changes. The altered genes linked to cortisol regulation suggest that maternal stress can influence fetal development beyond the prenatal period.

Águeda Castro, first author of the study and a CIBERSAM researcher at the University of Barcelona, emphasized the need to support maternal mental health from the outset of pregnancy.

“This study underscores the importance of taking care of the mental health of mothers from the beginning of pregnancy, since stress could leave a biological imprint on the baby’s development through epigenetic mechanisms that we are just beginning to understand,” noted Castro.
