As the 80th United Nations General Assembly approaches, a high-ranking Iranian parliamentarian has highlighted the significance of President Massoud Pezeshkian‘s visit to New York. The visit is viewed as a crucial possibility to de-escalate tensions, alleviate sanctions, and explore new avenues for diplomacy.

Mohammad‑Mehdi Shahriari, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, reportedly stated that with the approval of the Iranian Leader and a unified domestic stance, President Pezeshkian could leverage this trip to engage in direct discussions with Western leaders, perhaps leading to constructive outcomes. shahriari’s comments were reported by IRNA on Monday.

These statements come at a time when relations between Iran and Western nations are especially strained. The UK, France, and Germany recently activated a “snapback mechanism” aimed at reinstating stringent UN Security Council sanctions against Iran.

Shahriari emphasized that merely delivering speeches at the UN or holding meetings with Eastern or Non‑Aligned states would be insufficient to improve Iran’s economic and political standing. He asserted that direct engagement with the US and European countries is vital for achieving sustainable and mutually beneficial agreements.

He also advised the foreign policy team to consult with Iranian experts both within the country and abroad to formulate practical proposals that would be acceptable to negotiating partners.

shahriari cautioned against potential Israeli threats and the possibility of UN Security council resolutions, warning that renewed sanctions and military pressure could impede sustainable development.

He concluded by stating that the New York visit, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, could also serve as a platform to defend Iran’s national interests.
