“Participation from foreign military personnel in this event is unacceptable and is considered by Ukraine as a mockery of the memory of the victory over Nazism,” the ministry said in a message on Telegram.

May 9 – not May 8 – is the day when Russia and some neighboring countries mark the anniversary of victory in 2nd World War. Russia traditionally has a large military parade in Moscow, which is often used by leaders as a propaganda show. The parade is particularly symbolic this year when it is 80 years since World War II ended.

Some countries have confirmed that they are sending heads of state and government to Moscow. Ukraine has also moved its mark back to May 8, in line with most European countries.
