Annapolis, Md. – The UMBC men’s soccer team battled the elements on a dreary night, but ultimately dropped a non-conference road contest at Navy on Tuesday evening.
The Retrievers out shot the Midshipmen 11-7 in the contest, but a 48th minute strike from Jorge Mayorga was enough to push Navy (2-2-4) past UMBC (4-2-2).
Six different Retrievers put a shot on target against Midshipmen keeper Robert Eaton, but the senior turned all six shots he faced away. Andres Javitt was one of the six UMBC players to record a shot on target, leading the way with three of the team’s 10 total shots.
Spencer Hanks put the lone UMBC shot on net in the first 45 minutes of the contest before the Retrievers peppered Eaton with five shots on goal in the second half.
For Navy, three of the team’s seven shots found the target with Emigdio Tormo Lopez recording a pair of saves. On the Midshipmen goal early in the second half, Nick Gallucci picked up the assist while Mayorga found the top left corner of the goal.
UMBC earned more chances from the corner, totaling four while Navy attempted just one corner kick.
Your next chance to support the Retrievers at Retriever Soccer Park comes on Saturday, September 20 as UMBC hosts George Mason. The first 300 fans in attendance will receive a branded stein to fill with assorted sodas as a part of UMBC’s Dawgtoberfest promotion.
