MÁV Győr Line: Fire Disrupts Railway Traffic

by Archynetys News Desk

“Train traffic continues to be suspended at Győr station because a fire broke out in the cable duct of the safety equipment at the Győr train station on Sunday evening.
Passengers traveling on the lines that touch Győr in the evening and at night – and presumably also on Monday – should expect a significantly longer journey time and a replacement bus transfer on Sunday evening, MÁV wrote on its website at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday. Traffic changes can be followed here.

The reason for the chaos on Sunday evening was previously announced by the CEO of the MÁV Group himself:

“In consultation with the National Disaster Management Authority, we had to suspend train services on the main line in Győr because a fire broke out in the cable channel of the safety equipment at the Győr railway station”

– wrote Zsolt Hegyi. According to the general manager, the first thing is to control the flames, guarantee the safety of passengers and railway passengers, and organize the onward transportation of passengers stuck due to the fire. “We are working on this now with all our might, and to restore traffic order on one of Hungary’s busiest railway lines by tomorrow morning,” he wrote.

According to the data on the Emma map search engine, several trains were already 15-30 minutes late around 8 p.m., but there were also trains that were already an hour or even an hour and a half late compared to their original schedule.

The general manager of MÁV indicated that the fire caused significant damage to the safety equipment, so restarting traffic will not be easy. “We will work all night and dawn to ensure that train traffic can return to main line 1 on Monday, and also to ensure that a sufficient number of buses are available in the morning if necessary,” he said.

Zsolt Hegyi apologized to the passengers, and asked those intending to travel tomorrow to consult the official websites of the MÁV group before departure. “The reasons and responsibility can only be clarified afterwards, but I guarantee everyone that it will not be left behind,” he wrote.

Traffic changes include that

Replacement buses transport passengers between Győrszentiván and Öttevény, Győrszabadhegy and Győr.

In addition, they list a dozen other traffic changes and affected flights on their website. The current disruption will also affect Monday’s schedule, as, for example, the Semmelweis EuroCity (EC 141) departing from Vienna at 8:42 a.m. to Keleti railway station only runs from Hegyeshalom.

Our readers reported that they experienced a complete collapse during the most frequented period on Sundays, some people sat on the train with Tata even after 11 pm, but they did not receive any information. “Trains are missed, I am personally waiting for the train at Győr station with a delay of 1+ hours. People from other missed trains have already been transferred to the train, it is complete chaos. No information is received,” they wrote. Others wrote that Railjet, IC, and Regiojet have been parking on the tracks for a long time.

According to another of our readers, a replacement bus was announced on the section between Győr and Győr-Gyárváros, which transferred the passengers who were going there to a train that was waiting in Gyárváros, which was supposed to arrive 1.5 hours before. “We thought that this train would continue, according to the train display at 8:00 p.m., according to the announcer, around 8:10 p.m. The train has not started since then, the train conductor gave information: since there is “no electricity” on the section, train traffic can only resume 1-2 hours later – if the fault is fixed by then,” he wrote.
