Grand-Bassam Celebrates African Cultural Luminaries
The historic city of Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, continues its tradition of celebrating influential figures in African culture. Following in the footsteps of reggae icon Alpha Blondy and Zoblazo maestro Meiway, Congolese singer-songwriter Lokua Kanza has been bestowed wiht the title of honorary citizen.

The municipal council of Grand-Bassam formally recognized the 67-year-old artist on April 24, 2025, citing his significant contribution to promoting and enriching African culture through his music.This honor underscores the city’s commitment to acknowledging artists who bridge cultural divides and champion African unity.

Mayor Jean-Louis Moulot expressed his “happiness” and “pride” in honoring Lokua Kanza, emphasizing that this distinction aligns with Grand-Bassam’s role as a capital of arts and culture. This initiative reflects a broader trend in Africa, where cities are increasingly leveraging cultural tourism to boost their economies. such as, the annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival attracts over 34,000 attendees, generating significant revenue for the city.
