Lindsey Worden Takes Helm as CEO of Holstein Association USA

by drbyos

Lindsey Worden, a trailblazer in the Holstein cattle industry, has taken the helm as CEO of Holstein Association USA, effective January 1st. This appointment places her at the center of a breed she has been surrounded by since her early years in New York, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Vermont.

A Lifelong Connection to Holsteins

Born into a 65-head registered Holstein dairy farming family in New York, Worden grew up deeply embedded in the breed’s world. Her journey continued as her parents moved to New Mexico to expand their operation to 1,400 milking cows, testament to her family’s adaptability and foresight in the face of industry changes.

“I really am motivated by trying to have a positive influence on the industry,” Worden stated, highlighting her commitment to shaping the future of Holsteins.

Transition to Leadership

Worden’s entry into leadership isn’t sudden but a natural progression resulting from a deep-rooted passion for genetics and a career dedicated to the Holstein breed. Initially working in public relations and communications, she transitioned to the director of the genetic services department at the Holstein Association USA.

“Genetics is really the reason that I’m in the dairy industry,” she emphasizes, crediting advancements in Holstein genetics for her love and dedication to the profession.

The Promise of Genetics

The progress made in Holstein genetics has provided farmers with diverse options aligned with various business goals, including high milk production, component richness, herd health, and genetic marketing. Whether focusing on dairy show cattle for young enthusiasts or commercial milk production, farmers can find suitable Holsteins to meet their needs.

Industry Challenges and Opportunities

Two major challenges she faces include adapting to new technology and addressing dairy herd consolidation. Worden believes technological advancements can significantly benefit the industry and plans to promote technology adoption among members.

In fall 2023, the association launched an online ear tag marketplace and plans to expand this platform with more services. In addition, a new podcast is set for launch later this year to enhance communication with members.

Building Partnerships

Partnerships and collaborations are crucial for the Association’s growth. Worden aims to connect with other organizations with similar goals, such as the Ayrshire, Milking Shorthorn, and Guernsey breeds. She seeks to expand the scope of service offerings and reach a narrower audience.

“Just really trying to look for partnerships and collaborations where we can add value that really aligns with our core mission but will be something that will allow us to either offer more services or better services or offer our services to a broader audience,” she explained.

Professional Involvements and Personal Ties

Worden’s professional responsibilities extend beyond her tenure at Holstein Association USA. She chairs the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding and participates in the World Holstein Friesian Federation and the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association. She holds a dual degree in dairy science and life science communication from the University of Wisconsin.

Though she doesn’t personally manage a dairy operation, Worden maintains strong ties to the industry through her genetic interests. Her family has a 250-head milking herd in New York, and she owns some cattle for her own breeding purposes.

“I think it really helps keep me connected,” Worden said, “because I’m not just an employee of the Holstein Association. I’m also a customer, and my family is a customer, and they have been for a long time.”

Next Steps for the Holstein Association USA

Under Worden’s leadership, the Association will continue to prioritize technology adoption, respond to herd consolidation, and seek strategic partnerships. Her contributions are expected to guide the Holstein breed through evolving market conditions and technological advancements.
