Les Misérables Movie Adaptations: Best Films Ranked

by drbyos

“As long as the three problems of the century, the degradation of man by the proletariat, the decline of woman by hunger, the atrophy of the child by night, are not resolved (…) as long as there is ignorance and poverty on earth, books of this nature may not be useless.” In his famous preface to Misérables – which can be contained in a single sentence – Victor Hugo reveals the stakes of what will become the quintessence of his work. An issue raised by a gallery of characters who have become universal and have entered into everyday language for some of them : Cosette, Gavroche, Jean Valjean, Marius and even the Thénardiers. The most famous work in the world is also one of the most adapted, whether in the form of manga, comics, telenovelas, musicals, television films and films. The latest version: Les Miserables by Fred Cavayé with Vincent Lindon (Jean Valjean), Tahar Rahim (Javert), Megan Northam (Cosette), Noémie Merlant (Fantine) and even Camille Cottin and Benjamin Lavernhes (the Thénardiers). Proof, if any were needed, of the striking modernity of this novel. While waiting to discover the feature film in theaters on November 11, 2026, a look back at the best adaptations of Misérables on screen.

Les Miserables by Jean-Paul Le Chanois (1958)

With Jean Gabin, Bertrand Blier, Danièle Delorme and Serge Reggiani

From the start, this adaptation brings together all the ingredients to become cult: an exceptional cast, genius co-writers (Michel Audiard, left due to a falling out with the director and replaced by René Barjavel) for one of the highest budgets of the timefinanced through a co-production with the Babelsberg studios in the GDR. Result : nearly 8 million spectators rushed to discover the Gabin-Blier duo as Jean Valjean and Javert and a counter-productive Bourvil as the terrifying Thénardier. Jean-Paul Le Chanois signs a great effective classic, remarkably embodied, with vintage photography very emblematic of its time. Le Chanois, a communist of Jewish origin and resistance fighter during the war, exalts humanist values and the great social struggles of the middle of the last century. A vestige of a certain French cinema at the dawn of the New Wave. Available for free on Arte until February 9, 2026.

Les Misérables by Robert Hossein (1982)

With Lino Ventura, Michel Bouquet, Jean Carmet and Evelyne Bouix

It is the most faithful adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel. Director Robert Hossein has combined the talents of a storyteller and the work of Alain Decaux as a historian to emphasize Man and the universal nature of history. With six months of filming and a pharaonic budget (the second highest of its time, behind Tess by Roman Polanski), the film also achieved one of the best results in theaters with nearly 4 million admissions, despite its duration of 3 hours 40 minutes. A success linked largely to its trio of exceptional actors: Lino Ventura (Jean Valjean), Michel Bouquet (Javert) and Jean Carmet (father Thénardier). Subsequently, the film will also be extended and split into four parts to be broadcast as a television saga. Available on VOD.

Les Misérables by Claude Lelouch (1995)

Les Misérables by Claude Lelouch (1995)

With Jean-Paul Belmondo, Michel Boujenah, Alessandra Martines, Annie Girardot

A relative commercial flop in France, Claude Lelouch’s film nonetheless remains an astonishing revisitation of the great classic transposed to the 20th century. Some have criticized the film for no longer having much in common with the original work, while others welcome an adaptation at the crossroads of genres, between comedy, melodrama, film noir and war film. Claude Lelouch cheerfully distils very personal ingredients: a boxer, a dancer, a mover, eras that telescope and pianoforte solos. An excellent soap opera supported by a top-flight cast which earned this adaptation the Golden Globe for best foreign film and Annie Girardot a César for acting. Available on VOD.

Les Miserables by Bille August (1998)

Les Miserables by Bille August (1998)

With Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush, Uma Thurman, Claire Danes.

The first Hollywood adaptation of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, the film was eagerly awaited. And is doing pretty well. Certainly, the budget and the casting do not prevent some blunders. Difficult to retrace this fresco in (only) 2 hours 13 minutes, especially when the director decided to focus on the Jean Valjean-Javert duel. Even if it means leaving out a whole part of the story. But Hugo’s genius and Hollywood aesthetics work. With a special mention to Claire Danes as Cosette. Available on VOD.

Les Miserables by Tom Hooper (2012)

Les Miserables by Tom Hooper (2012)

Avec  Hugh Jackman, Russel Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried.

An adaptation of an adaptation of an adaptation, the genesis of this film is like a series of nesting dolls. A musical comedy initially staged by Robert Hossein in 1980 and freely adapted from the novel, it was revisited at the Barbican Theater in London in 85 before reaching Broadway where it triumphed and enjoyed record longevity. It is this version that Hollywood has chosen to transpose directly from the boards to the movie sets. Even if it means offending purists of Hugo’s work. Result: a musical American style, with the cinema screen more saturated with stars than a red carpet on Oscar night and a certain Manichaeism worthy of the great blockbusters. But we have to give credit to Tom Hooper (A King’s Speech) an undeniable talent in directing and directing actors. The shots would also have been filmed without any playback. A great show crowned by 3 Oscars, including one for Anne Hathaway and her interpretation of Fantine. Available on VOD.

Special mention:

Jean Valjean, Eric Besnard (2025)

With Grégory Gadebois, Bernard Campan, Alexandra Lamy.

A very faithful adaptation of the first two books of Victor’s fresco, the film, as its name suggests, focuses on the hero and his way of the cross towards redemption. Currently in cinema.

Les Miserables de Ladj Ly (2019)

With Damien Bonnard, Alexis Manenti, Djebril Zonga

The film quotes the novel and refers to it without being an adaptation, bringing to the forefront the political remarks of Victor Hugo, on poverty and violence. Available on VOD.

Les Misérables, TV film by Josée Dayan (2000)

With Gérard Depardieu, John Malkovich, Christian Clavier, Virginie Ledoyen and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Series in 4 episodes of 90 minutes.

Les Misérables, TV film by Glenn Jordan (1973)

With Richard Jordan, Anthony Perkins and Ian Holm.

Worth seeing if only to discover Anthony Perkins (Psychosis, The Trial) as the inscrutable Javert. Available on VOD.
