ECU Health Empowers Nursing Professionals Through Leadership Development and Advocacy
Healthcare institutions are constantly looking for ways to enhance patient care and ensure their teams are at the forefront of best practices. ECU Health is no exception, with a steadfast commitment to cultivating nursing leadership through professional development, fostering nursing research, and influencing health care policy.
Laura Respess & Dawn Tetterton
With the successful conclusion of her term as a district representative, Laura Respess served as the voice for District VI, one of North Carolina’s largest regions. Her responsibilities included organizing quarterly meetings, planning educational sessions, and coordinating contributions for major events such as the annual conferences.
Respess was instrumental in promoting the submission of abstracts and Quality Initiative work from members in her region for the NCONL conference. Her efforts ensured that the outstanding work done at ECU Health could be shared on a broader stage.
“One of the things we’ve always advocated for at ECU Health is having nurses on boards,” Respess emphasized. “Being a representative comes with the benefits of staying informed about statewide developments and sharing best practices.”
Through her role as a NCONL representative, Respess had a front-row seat in understanding legislative matters from a nursing perspective, crucial for ensuring the profession’s voice is heard in the legislature.
Following Respess’s tenure, Dawn Tetterton stepped up to continue the mission. In her new position, Tetterton aims to highlight the remarkable achievements of nursing professionals at ECU Health.
“Through NCONL, members can showcase the excellent work being done at ECU Health,” said Tetterton. “We submit several posters and abstracts annually and have had winners chosen for podium presentations to share nursing best practices they have developed.”
Tetterton acknowledged Respess’s dedication and praised her for inspiring others to take on leadership roles. She expressed confidence that she would uphold the standard of excellence set by Respess in her new Regional NCONL Representative role.
In recognition of her exceptional service over six years, Respess commended Tetterton’s leadership and expressed faith in her ability to thrive in her new responsibilities.
The Focus on Diversification
Respess presented Tetterton with the challenge of driving the district’s diversification, a strategic goal of the organization.
“My challenge for Dawn is to drive our district’s diversification,” Respess explained. “We primarily focus on acute care, but we recognize the need to reach out to nursing leaders in ambulatory care and health departments across the state.”
Including these sectors is critical for the organization’s overall mission, as they play a significant role in ensuring comprehensive health care solutions.
The Future of Nursing Leadership at ECU Health
The continued focus on leadership development, research, and advocacy sets the stage for ECU Health to maintain its reputation as a leader in nursing. Under the capable leadership of Respess and Tetterton, the organization is well-positioned to advance the nursing profession, ensuring that health care remains at the forefront of innovation and quality.
As health care continues to evolve, the role of dedicated professionals like Laura Respess and Dawn Tetterton will be more vital than ever in driving positive changes that benefit patients and communities alike.
