Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing various aspects of our lives, from education too environmental solutions. Students today have diverse perspectives on AI, recognizing both its potential benefits and potential drawbacks. Some worry about environmental impacts and the erosion of human skills, while others see AI as a powerful tool for solving complex problems.
AI: A Double-Edged Sword
Some students express concerns about the over-reliance on AI. “If you try to get AI to do all your work, it’s definitely detrimental, because then you loose your skills to write and read,” warns one student. “It can make students more lazy. But that’s your loss, if you’re using it to cheat on your work.”
Mahama Kaba, 15, from The Bronx, New York, echoes these concerns, noting the potential for AI to negatively impact personal development. “Social media has already taken over peoples’ personalities, and AI speeds up that process. If you ask AI how to respond to a message, and it gives you an automated response, that’s going to impact the way you think you should respond to people. Eventually, when you use the advice of a robot, you become a robot.”

However, others emphasize the positive potential of AI when used responsibly. They believe that AI can be a valuable tool for innovation and problem-solving.
AI as a Tool for Good
Siddhi Singh, 17, from Highlands Ranch, Colorado, shares a compelling example of AI’s positive impact. Faced with the problem of wildlife vehicle collisions in her area, she developed a device that uses AI to detect deer and other large animals. “In our case,AI was really useful,because all we had to do was feed data into the model: I ran hundreds of thermal video frames through a computer vision model to recognize deer and other large wildlife,wich trained our device to do real-time detection on the road without us having to manually analyze hours of footage. That’s the power of AI.”
Another student highlights the importance of education in navigating the AI landscape. “Kids Are Going to use AI, So Teach Them How,” they argue. By integrating AI into the curriculum, students can learn to use it effectively and ethically. They suggest asking, “Why am I using AI right now? Am I using it to make my work better? Am I using it because
