Kennett Restaurant Feeds Seniors | Funding Loss Relief

KENNETT, Mo. (KAIT) -On Mondays, a Kennett restaurant is serving up more than barbecue; it’s serving up hope for seniors who recently lost a critical meal service.

Upon walking in, someone was already donating $50 to help feed seniors.

This all started because the local Nutrition Center lost funding and had to stop Monday meals.

When B2Q BBQ owner Brian Grubb heard the news, he and his staff stepped up immediately.

They created a five-dollar Monday special for anyone 60 or older — a barbecue sandwich, chips, and water.

Cook Jimbo Kulan said they wanted to provide a lifeline for seniors.

“So, I know there used to be food banks, and those have lost too, so this gives at least one more option, and they are not completely without options; that was our goal,” Kulan said.

Word is spreading fast, and the community is stepping up to help cover the costs.

“People have slowly started coming in saying, hey, how can I help? I want to help. ‘ So, we are actually going to start collecting more donations to help, and it will go towards those free meals,” Kulan said.

Thanks to those donations, the restaurant can already provide 25 free meals to seniors in need.

One of those generous donors is Debra Sample, a home health worker who sees the struggle every day.

“I see what they need. I go into their home, and they depend on the meals that they get. Now that they have started to do the B2Q BBQ, that’s why I went ahead and gave a donation to help,” Sample said.

Sample hopes her donation will inspire others to do the same.

“The people can support and donate need to do it, because they need the help,” Sample said.

Seniors 60 and older need a valid ID for the five-dollar meal special. Donations can be dropped off in person at the restaurant.
